I am currently part of an ongoing interactive mural project for a local Colorado K8 school!
A talented coworker painted the walls themselves. I am contributing several animals, plants, and minerals that will be laminated so that students can position them on the walls in their proper environments.
My removable components are created with acrylic paint on bristol paper. Each animal has a matching label with basic information about its species and biome. These little paintings are intended to be both educational and beautiful!
This work in progress has many components and is the first of a larger planned series! For each piece in the series, I am designing a tile of wallpaper and painting it by hand. Each wallpaper design will be wrapped around a painting and then torn / burn / melted / peeled / otherwise damaged to reveal the painting underneath. That painting is currently still in progress!
After I paint the single tile of wallpaper, I then use Photoshop to create a repeating pattern.
I ordered a swatch of wallpaper just to see how it looked and it was perfect! The only current issue I'm dealing with is the glare that bounces off the finish on the wallpaper, which is of course an occupational hazard when using a dark pattern. I'm working on finding a finish that makes me happy.
I have mounted some watercolor paper to a 24x36 wood panel and am currently covering it in hand-drawn grass! This process is laborious but very meditative. I will paint the grass with watercolor when I've finished lining it. Finally, I will wrap it in the wallpaper and then tear the wallpaper away.
As of August 2023, I am slowly working through the final pass on the painting itself.
